I mean I never hear people every talk about the 15000 rappers going through depression and usually dedicating several tracks off of their debut albums to talk about their addiction to drugs or pills or their suicidal tendency. The only exceptions are Eminem and Biggie’s one song Suicidal Thoughts. Outside of that, no one cares to mention it. Sad rock band makes a song about crying or a band and their fans were lots of black/anti-social behavior all over America we must investigate what is wrong with Middle America! Black men aren’t allowed to be depressed or suicidal though. Always ignored to fit whatever narrative people want to talk about hip-hop. I mean that positive or negative. Even the people who love it rarely ever bring it up.
Yes, this. Didn’t you know black people are superhuman? Didn’t you know that the only emotions we feel are happiness and anger? We don’t get sad or depressed. Because we’re strong. The drug use expressed in hip hop culture is because we are delinquent & disobedient in nature, not because decades of systemic inequality has made us emotionally and mentally downtrodden. Nah. We some strong negros. We don’t take anti-depressants or go to therapy. We come out of the ghetto unscathed, just as we came out of slavery unscathed, and everybody knows it. Everybody knows us as strong, violent, angry, sassy, attitudinal, brave, or funny. But sadness is not an emotion we are allowed to experience.
